excerpt

“Can I help you?” she asks in what she hopes is a tone that's strong and says 'I'm in control'.

Elaine turns her attention to Bronagh and snorts in disgust at her presence.

“I don't think so. You see I am the person who should be running this party, so I will be taking over from here!” Elaine steps forward, side stepping Max and going straight towards Bronagh, but she holds her ground, not letting her fear show.

“No, I think you'll find I organised this party through House of Fun party planners. Now could you explain exactly who you are and why you are here?” Max stands staring at the two women, amazed at the bare faced cheek of the blonde woman and proud his girlfriend for her strength. Elaine takes a step back as if she'd been slapped, annoyed that Bronagh hadn't worked out who she was.

“I'm the person you stole the job from so you could play at parties!” Everything starts to click into place for Bronagh and Max; all the messages and this woman turning up wherever they were. 'Is this woman stalking me?' Bronagh thinks quickly to herself, then pushes the thought aside, knowing she hasn't time to worry about it at that moment.

“Ah, so you're Elaine are you?” She looks Elaine up and down before continuing, “I've heard a lot about you, and not all good. Now I'm sorry you lost your job, but that had nothing to do with me. So if you don't mind I would like you to leave as this party is by invitation only and you have definitely not been invited.” Elaine's eyes go wide. She expected Bronagh to cower in front of her, and the fact that she is facing up to her is causing her anger to rise. “And while you're here can I also make a point of telling you to leave me and my boyfriend alone, or I will be in contact with the police again, this time with a name.” Elaine snarls. The thought that Bronagh had already been in contact with the police and that she would go back to them makes Elaine snap, and she starts screaming in Bronagh's face.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

A mother, a wife, a sister, an advocate, an avid reader and a first time author.  For as long as I can remember, I've loved to read.  I was the nerd in school who brought books to read during the few minutes of downtime in class or on the hour long bus ride to school each day.

I started writing stories as a way to escape reality while in high school, though only a handful of people even knew about them.  I put my hobby to the side, went to college, graduate school, got married and had a few kids.  Then my writing bug started biting again and I opened a blank word document.

Synopsis

Ava owes everything to Nathan, her boyfriend. Without him she is useless and incapable of independent thought or action. Ava knows this because Nathan has told her, repeatedly, and just to reinforce the point, the occasional slap or punch helps, doesn't it? After all, it is her fault, as she does ‘push all his buttons' and cause him to be so angry.

This seems to be the pattern of Ava's life until she has a chance meeting with Neil, a man who is different, who seems to understand, and she takes the brave step of asking him to help her leave her possessive, abusive relationship. Leaving is never that easy and Nathan's persistence in pursuing Ava is the cause of much mental anguish for both her and Neil, for whom the long-buried memory of an abusive father is brought back into focus.

They are both caught up in uncertainty and physical violence, which test the tender love that is growing between them.

EXCERPT

“Are you ready yet, Ava?” Nathan shouts gruffly from the bottom of the grand gold and red staircase that dominates the very large very ostentatious hallway in Nathan's large seven-bedroom mansion. It has every mod con known to man and no expense has been spared on decorating it, but it is a cold heartless house. Upstairs, in the pristine and very clinical looking white bathroom, Ava stands in front of the mirror. She is small in height, just getting to five feet, blue eyes, with shoulder length brown hair, and the pain dancing in her eyes is noticeable even to her. The bruises on her arms are already starting to emerge. She is going to need to keep her stole on to cover up the finger marks he has left on her porcelain skin, she doesn't want anybody asking questions of the amazing Mr Low, the six foot, toned, black haired, green eyed bully that is her boyfriend.

Taking a last look in the mirror to check that her make up isn't too heavy and her lipstick isn't too bold, Ava thinks to herself why? Why do I always manage to get him so upset, what is it that I have to change to make him happy? Can I make him happy? Is it actually me?

Another shout from downstairs breaks into Ava's musings; she jumps at his tone and swallows her fear down, taking a deep breath she answers,

“Coming honey.” So with a strained smile painted on her face she walks out of the bathroom, picking up her stole from the bannister and glides down the sweeping, red-carpeted staircase.

“You look stunning,” Nathan compliments her, and he sounds genuine, though he always is after he has gotten rid of his temper. He is always loving, sorry and remorseful after he has beaten her, then her heart starts to lift again. The change in Nathan's is complete, well at least enough for Ava to think that this time he really means it, he really is sorry and he does love her. That is until he sees her walking down the last of the stairs and sneers at her.

“Maybe, if you didn't flaunt yourself with your whore-red lipstick and come to bed eyes, I wouldn't need to remind you that you're mine so much!”

Ava's heart free falls to her stomach, 'and there it is' she thinks, his temper is still there, just under the surface as always. The small voice in her head reminds her that he is probably going to be like this forever, that he isn't changing and he never will! Putting her head down Ava walks from the mansion and climbs into the back of the waiting silver 1965, 2.5 V8 Daimler.

INTERVIEW: Madison Quinn

INTERVIEW WITH AUTHOR
 MADISON QUINN

1.      What is your name and where are you from?

Madison Quinn. From Northeastern Pennsylvania.

2.      What genre do you write in?  Why?

I write Contemporary Romance. This is the genre I read the most of and I find that it speaks to me.  I love reading a book that will allow the reader to escape reality… even if it’s only for a little while.

3.      What are you working on now?

I am in the final stages of preparing my second book for release, due out in November. At the same time I’m also working on my third book which is something different for me. Still contemporary romance, but the start of it is more dark because of what the couple go through together.

4.      Who are some authors in your genre that inspire you?

Oh boy. There are so many! Let’s see, I’ve recently fallen in love with Pepper Winters. I could never write some of the darkness that she does but I absolutely love the way she makes the readers fall in love with the characters, no matter how dark they might be.

I love Lynda Archer’s Boardroom series. She packs so much into the stories that at least initially focus purely on sex.

5.      How did you come up with the idea for your book?

It’s completely random. The idea for the third book I’m working on (still untitled) came to me while driving to work. Sometimes I’ll be reading a book or watching something on television and an idea that has nothing to do with the other will just pop in to my head.

6.      Do you outline books ahead of time or are you more of a by-the-seat-of-your-pants writer?

I haven’t outlined anything LOL I’m definitely more of fly by the seat of you pants. It’s funny because when it comes to anything else in life, I’m not like this at all. But when it comes to writing, I need the characters and the story to tell me where to take the book.

7.      What are your top three favorite books of all time?

That’s tough… I fell in love with VC Andrews as a child… Flowers in the Attic was one of my favorites. I loved the series that followed (if you watched the movie, go read the book. You’re missing so much!). I’ve reread so many of her books. So probably any of her books would be my favorite.

8.      If you had one superpower that could change the world, what would it be?  Why?

It sounds cliché, but it would be to end the suffering of children. Something that would erase childhood cancer and physical/sexual abuse so they could have the childhood they deserve.

9.      Why did you decide to become a writer?

I used to write in high school, a LOT. I’d take spiral notebooks and fill them with stories. But then I became an adult and life got in the way. A few years ago, I started writing again. A few people encouraged me to share them. Though it took a little while for me to finally get the guts to do it, I published my first book last month.

10.    Are there any nuggets of wisdom you can impart to aspiring writers?

Just do it. Find a group of people who will support you and hold your hand as you walk through the writing and publishing process. It’s not easy, but the people who are with you along the way make all the difference. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

I just want to take the time and welcome Madison Quinn and thank her for taking the time to answer these questions.  Madison and her books will be spotlighted throughout the week.  There will also be a giveaway!  The giveaway will be hosted on my FB Page:

Winner will be chosen at the end of the week.

INTERVIEW: Author Fiona Morgan

INTERVIEW WITH AUTHOR
 FIONA MORGAN

1.   What is your name and where are you from?

Hi all I am Fiona Morgan and I live in a small town called Airdrie which is in the West of Scotland in between Glasgow and Edinburgh.

2. What genre do you write in? Why?

I write Thriller Romance novels. I didn't pick the genre thriller romance novels, per se, it was more that it picked me. I wanted my stories to have some excitement and danger, but with a love story intertwined.

3. What are you working on now?

I am working on my third novel which is another thriller romance based in Glasgow and very cleverly titled book three at the moment.

4. Who are some authors in your genre that inspire you?

I enjoy reading Martina Cole books who is quite close to the genre I write in and Stuart MacBride who's genre isn't exactly like mine, but is thriller and police drama, which I love.

5. How did you come up with the idea for your book?

With Free I wanted to show that domestic violence isn't exclusive to breadline, alcohol dependent households, but it also occurs in the more affluent households, all walks of life.

With What's Mine, I wanted to delve into how jealousy and manipulation can over take all parties involved.

I all my books, I like showing strong women, how they can be knocked down and get back up.

6. Do you outline books ahead of time or are you more of a by-the-seat-of-your-pants writer?

I do a bit of both. I have an idea of the main events I want to happen in the story, but how they events fit together is up to the story and the words that flow. My characters surprise me sometimes with what they do, making the story change in a totally different direction and I love it.

7. What are your top three favorite books of all time?

This is a hard one as I love to read. I think 1984 by George Orwell is up there as is To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee and I think my third one Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier.

8. If you had one superpower that could change the world, what would it be? Why?

I have given this much thought throughout my life, as you do, and have decided that Telekenesis/Psychokinesis it would come in handy being a mum, helping me to get everything done that I needed done, especially when my girls were young, and it would be great fun to play with if I was bored.

9. Why did you decide to become a writer?

I had always wanted to write a book and when I felt my depression creeping back in I knew I had to push myself to do something that I had always dreamed of doing but would also scare me and give me a challenge. When my girls were young I learned British Sign Language to challenge myself and this time I decided to write my book, telling myself that if I didn't do it, it would never get done, and I didn't want any 'what ifs'. So I started writing as a hobby, something only for me, then once it was started my friend wanted to have a read, so I thought 'why not' and from there she pushed me to get it finished and get it sent out to publishers, which I did and here we are.

10. Are there any nuggets of wisdom you can impart to aspiring writers?

Go for it! If you don't do it it will never get done... and once you start, remember the first draft is for you to tell yourself the story and it never stays that way. It's not meant to be pretty at that point, just get the words down and make them pretty when you edit. Oh and good luck.

I just want to take the time and welcome Fiona Morgan and thank her for taking the time to answer these questions.  Fiona and her books will be spotlighted throughout the week.  There will also be a giveaway!  The giveaway will be hosted on my FB Page:
