BOOK TOUR & REVIEW: To Entice An Earl

To Entice an Earl
Author:  Naomi Boom
Genre: Regency Romance
Blurb:

Miss Alexandra Farris lost her heart to her older brother's friend, Lord Maxon Collins, long, long ago. Despite her girlhood attempts to win him, he never noticed her. Now that her first season is underway, she understands why. He prefers willowy blondes, not curvaceous maidens with darker coloring like herself. Rather than wallow in self-pity, she forgets love and focuses on something more attainable—an advantageous match

Lord Collins is plagued by an uncomfortable feeling whenever he goes near Miss Farris. One of annoyance. And yet, he can’t seem to stop thinking of her, touching her, kissing her...He must act in her brother’s stead, which means he has to approve her suitor and ensure her safety. Unfortunately, he can’t seem to find a worthy gentleman.

Wedding her off should be a simple task, but not if he can’t let her go.

She inhaled and stepped up to him. He was so tall, at least five inches taller than her, yet she would not allow him to intimidate her, not this gentleman she used to pester as a little girl. She peered up at him and planted her fists on her hips. “You cannot possibly imagine I would listen to you, can you?”

His eyes narrowed, and he straightened from his position against the wall which brought him that much closer to her. “I don’t only imagine. I know you will listen to me. You have no other options.”

“Of course I do.”

“No, you do not.”

Their gazes locked, and everything around Alexa faded away, except for the brilliant blue eyes which held her riveted in place. She brought her palm to her

chest to make sure her heart still beat.

It did, just barely.

She finally broke away and whispered, “I have not given him a response yet.”

His responding smile lacked warmth, and he appeared to gloat as he said, “Excellent. I never have liked Lord Edwin and cannot fathom why you do.”

“I happen to be very much in love with him.” She colored. She had just told Lord Collins she loved Lord Edwin. Where was her fan when she needed it most? Next to Miss Cannis where she had forgotten it. And now, she had to endure a most frustrating conversation where she admitted a falsehood. Not a simple falsehood, either. One which competed with the largest untruths of her life.

Her rushed denial teetered on her lips as a stronger gust of wind tore through her hair, causing several more strands to dislodge. She muttered a curse and reached

up to repair the damage the wind had made.

His large, warm hand shot out and stopped her. The humid night air could not compare to the warmth of his hand on hers, nor could it compete with the spasmodic tingles breaking out throughout her body.

The contact was too unexpected.

Too intimate.

Too much.

She darted a hesitant glance his way where he quickly masked a warm look and took a step away from her. “Leave your hair.”

She swayed from the loss of his touch and the lack of warmth in his tone.

“Are you quite all right?” he asked with a sneer, as if to erase all touches of warmth with harshness. It hadn’t worked, though. She knew better.

Whatever strange demon had overtaken him tonight was not normal and was, quite frankly, vexing to deal with. “I see you can choose to employ good manners when you wish.”

His countenance darkened and he lifted a brow. “You evidently are just fine.”

Naomi Boom never expected to love writing. Her inspiration struck while searching for the perfect historical romance novel to read. Nothing sounded appealing, so she decided to write her own. That one novel has morphed into a series, and hopefully many, many more.

She resides in her home state of South Dakota with her husband and toddler. Her dream is to someday find an acreage where she can raise chickens and, naturally, continue her writing.

Blog Topic

I see from your site that you are well traveled.  I only wish I have traveled and seen as much.  I noted that the book "Ten Things I love About You" by Julia Quinn seems to have started your path towards writing historical romance.  I am a huge fan of Julia Quinn and was wondering what it was about that specific book that so sparked your love for Regency?  And in turn, what do you believe, in your writing would inspire that same spark in readers like me?
Julia Quinn. She holds a special place in my heart. Before my sister forced me to read Ten Things I Love About You, I read fantasy novels. Before that, science fiction. Before that, westerns. Before that… you get the picture. I have read a wide variety of fiction but somehow, Regency romances stand out. I fell for them, most likely because of all the dashing heroes, actual ladies for heroines, and wit.
But let’s back-track a moment. In 2011, I had just finished reading Laurell K. Hamilton’s Merry Gentry series when my sister handed me a copy of Ten Things I Love About You. I scoffed. The novel screamed girly and sweet. I was in the military and didn’t really fit that demographic. Turns out, it was definitely girly.
And I loved it.
Ten Things I Love About You fascinated me. Sebastian Grey, the Hero, was a rake, which made little sense to me since I was unfamiliar with the term. Then, there was the whole idea that Miss Annabel Winslow, the heroine, couldn’t be alone with a gentleman unless she wished to face ruination. Again, didn’t get it. But what I did get was Julia Quinn’s superb writing, the humor she instills in even the most common of scenes, and the witty repertoire between characters.
I don’t want to go into the specifics of Ten Things I Love About You too much, but I will tell say I re-read the novel before writing this post. I still love it. I can see why I fell for Regency romances. The stories are like fairy tales. Most of the time, the heroes are heroic and the heroines are worth saving.
This post seems to keep growing, so pardon me if I am writing too much. But, I have another part of the question to answer so I will try to keep it brief.
Would To Entice an Earl spark a love for Regency? Too many factors exist to say for certain, but what I can say is To Entice an Earl is emotionally gripping; every time I read it I get hooked, and I’ve read it countless times. The hero and heroine engage in some delightful dialogue, and I simply love the ending; it feels like one of those blissfully happy endings that leave me almost giddy. But everything I say is extremely biased, so there is only one way to find out. Give it a try and read it.
My  Review ⭐⭐⭐(3.5  Stars)

Alexa Farris has known Lord Collins since she was five years old and has been in love with him since she was fourteen.    She waited for him to notice her, but he never did.  He treated her only with sisterly affection.  Now although she still harbours an unrequited love for Maxon, Lord Collins, she awaits the proposal of another man, Lord Edwin.  Edwin demands perfection of himself and everything and everyone around him.  Alexa is no exception.  He criticizes her hair and gives her cream for her freckles!  Since Alexa cannot marry for love, she believes that Lord Edwin is as good as anyone else to marry.  After all, he has a good pedigree and good looks!

As their courtship continues, Lord Maxon returns from London where he went to mend his broken heart.  He is no longer the carefree man she knew.  He is hardened and bitter after having his heart broken by the woman he loved. He now lets Alexa know that although she got approval from her brother to marry Lord Edwin, his approval means naught because Gavin has left him in charge of her care.  He does not like Lord Edwin Rudgers and tells her so.

From this disagreement, Alexa sets out to prove she loves Lord Edwin (even though she doesn’t) so that she may spend more time with Maxon.  Lord Maxon on the other hand sets out to try and separate the couple.  He believes his motives stem from the fact that Alexa deserves better than Lord Edwin.  However, unbeknownst to him at this time, he wants Alexa.

The more time they spend together, the more Maxon starts to notice her.  Her curves, her smile and he wonders why he has never seen her in that light before.  Will Alexa take her ruse to far and marry Lord Edwin just to spite Maxon?

This is a sweet read.  I enjoyed reading this book despite my preference for angst and love scenes.  There are many misunderstandings and untold feelings that are the cause of the strife.  Both characters fear rejection.  Alexa, because she does not believe Maxon likes her type and Maxon, because he has had his heart broken before.

The dialogue between the two main characters was enjoyable.  They tease each other unmercifully and try to one up each other.  The romance is a bit slow to build up, for me but I found it realistic and refreshing.  Maxon does not just suddenly love her after being gone and not noticing her.  It is a gradual build up with time spent together.

Alexa is a strong character and really knows what she wants.  It’s if she will be ever able to attain it that is the problem.  She is ready to accept a man she does not love until she realizes his true colors.  Alexa also brings a lightness to Lord Collins that he has not felt in years.  She changes him just by being herself.

Lord Maxon Collins comes off as hardened and bitter but, he truly likes Alexa and wants what’s best for her.  He tries underhanded but somewhat honest things to try and bring Alexa to her senses.  Once he realizes what Alexa means to him, he is upfront and honest.

I find the story line was ended a little too abruptly between Lord Edwin Rudgers and Alexa.  We hear nothing more of him despite his absolute want to marry her throughout the book.

Overall an enjoyable read.

Please note that although I gave this book 3.5 Stars, this has more to do with my preference for angst and sensuality.  I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a clean well-written historical romance.

Pure Healing
Author:  Aja James
Genre:  Paranormal, Fantasy Romance

Synopsis:

Enter the world of Pure Ones, a race of immortal, supernaturally powerful beings who protect humankind, where sexual intercourse with anyone other than one’s Eternal Mate leads to a slow, painful death within thirty days.
The Healer of the race, Rain, is the only exception to this rule. To harness and accumulate enough energy to heal severe wounds, especially as the war between her people and the vampire hordes accelerates, she must take a Consort once every ten years and draw strength from his blood and body. But as the war wears on, few Pure-males who are strong enough to serve as her Consort remain. Valerius, Protector of the race, is the strongest candidate.

Despite their instant attraction ten years ago when they first met, Valerius has staunchly avoided applying to be the Healer’s Consort. The brutality and violence he suffered as a Roman sex slave in his human life ate away at his soul, leaving a dark abyss of torment and self-doubt.

Now, as Rain’s strength drains with every healing act, Valerius cannot escape the fact that he may be the only one who can save her, and in so doing, afford his people greater hope for the future as battles intensify.

Will Rain and Valerius find their way to each other as the struggles between good and evil evolve?
Excerpt:
“Rain,” he called to her, the first time he’d ever used her name in the ten years of their acquaintance. “Rain!” he could not keep the alarm from his voice as she remained lifeless in his embrace.

He shook her a little, set his face close to hers to detect her breathing. The barest of breath relieved him so much he shuddered from head to toe.

“You little fool!” he cursed her, furious that she’d used what scarce energy she had remaining to heal him. He thrust his wrist against her lips and urged, “Take it. Bite me, damn you!”

Though there was no movement, he felt her stirring, her breath a little stronger against his skin. She opened her mouth and formed words, but they were uttered so softly he could not hear.

He bent closer until their foreheads were touching. “What is it sweetheart? What do you need?”

In a raspy whisper she breathed, “I’ll not take from the body I just healed.”

“Stupid girl,” Valerious berated her, though his deep tone of concern was at odds with his words. “I would have healed eventually on my own. Your energy is wasted on me.” He thrust his wrist against her lips again, forcefully enough to scratch the skin against her canines.

“Now feed,” he commanded in a voice that brooked no argument.

Amazed at her own strength, Rain suddenly pushed back from his embrace and off his lap. She scooted back against the foot of the bed and let her head flop against the bedframe.

“You are not my Consort. This is not the Cycle,” she whispered weakly but resolutely. “I will have no other but my Consort.”

“Then choose me!” Valerius exploded, uncaring of the consequences he’d spent two thousand years avoiding. “It is the least I can do to repay you–”

He broke off at a resounding slap against his cheek. Though lacking in force to bring any pain, the sound it made nevertheless reverberated in the silent room.

Stunned, he could only gape at her.

MY REVIEW ⭐⭐⭐⭐(4.25)

This book is engrossing, consuming, page turning awesomeness.  It is angst-filled and action packed.  It even made me teary-eyed.  The world Aja James builds is intricately woven.  So different from what I have previously seen and read.

Valerius is absolutely yummy. He was tortured and abused in his past but he is so strong!  He spent 10 years as a vassal where he was atrociously and violently abused.  He eventually frees himself but the emotional scars remain.

Val now shuns and fears touch since he has only even been handled and cared for in a negative and detrimental way.  Never has he been loved or kissed by any female safe his mother and sister.  He does not believe he is good enough for Rain.  He feels dirty and used.

Rain is a wonderfully strong healer and person.  She uses her gift to heal human and Pure alike. She is filled with guilt for past failures.  Twice before, she believed she was in love.  Both times she was wrong and both the men she thought she loved died.  Now, she is adamant that none of her consorts fall in love with her.  Val, however has loved her forever even before he himself knew.  There is a strong spark and awareness between them from the moment they meet.

Although I absolutely adore this book, I found the beginning was a little difficult to understand because there was a lot of terms I did not know.  There is a Glossary at the end of the book, however, I believe it would have been better served at the beginning.  Sometimes, it was difficult to know whose view was being narrated as it would switch from one to another without any indication.

This aside, Pure Healing is an Intriguing and captivating story.  I loved the plot line and twists as well as all the characters.  The story flowed well and kept me wondering what would happen next.  Cannot wait to read the next instalment!

I recommend this to anyone who loves paranormal romance as well as a tortured hero.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.  All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Aja has been writing stories since the age of six, and novels since the age of thirteen. While she'd be the first to admit that those early efforts weren't particularly good, she sure loved putting them down on paper!

The best part of writing, according to Aja, is that it’s completely organic, the way the stories develop. When the inspiration hits, she writes just so she herself can learn where the characters are headed because oftentimes, they take her by surprise! It is her ultimate dream to share her stories with as many readers as she possibly can.

Her other loves include art, cooking, old movies (anything with Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Robert Redford, Vivien Leigh, Elizabeth Taylor, Paul Newman, Clark Gable, and all the song and dance numbers because she can’t watch them and not be happy!)

MY REVIEW ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Noah MacKenzie is an 18-year-old trying to find friendship, love and herself for the first time in her life.  As a child of only six, she was abandoned by her mother to an orphanage without notice or care.  Although her physical needs like food, education, housing and clothing were provided, it lacked the emotional needs.  The care was clinical and no real bonds were made.  At school, she felt like an outsider looking in as classmates could not understand why she had no parents while they themselves had loving doting parents.

Now, on her eighteenth birthday, she is trying to fulfill all the things she never had or the things she never experienced.  To keep everything in order, she creates an Orbit List.  This list comprises of everything she would like to do in one year (just like the sun orbits around the earth in on year).

The first on her list is completed when she moves from her orphanage in Seattle to her new home in Florida.  She moves away to get away from the memories of her mother and to experience life at its fullest.  Here, she meets Madison and Benson who are to be her roommates and who will eventually become wonderful friends.  Madison is open and friendly, whereas Benson is eccentric and loveable.  Although she hits is off with Madison right away, Benson is a little harder to win over.  With Noah’s kindness and understanding, Benson finally relents and they become friends as well.

Her next task to dive into is to find a job.  She is nervous about this task because although she has a high school diploma, she has absolutely no experience in anything.  While looking through employment ads outside on the porch, she notices a man across the street.  No, that is not exactly correct, she gawks, she stares, she is entranced by the man across the street.  She cannot take her eyes from him.  He notices and comes over.  Immediately there is a pull, an attraction between the two.  He introduces himself as Brazen Hale and he owns his own business flipping houses.  He says he is also looking for an assistant and hires her on the spot!  Noah, relieved that she does not have to go through interviews, time and effort readily agrees.

On her first day on the job, she meets Brazen’s best friend and co-owner Sunday.  Although they get off on the wrong foot, they become fast friends.  Sunday tells Noah that she wants the best for Brazen and she believes Noah can be that for him.  She knows Noah can lighten up Brazen;s burden as he has been watching, protecting and putting his life on hold for so long.  Eventually, Noah learns that Sunday is being abused by her ex-husband.

After this talk, it does not take long for the passion and spark to ignite between Brazen and Noah.  Once it has, it’s beautiful.  What happens when a life so beautiful suddenly isn’t and darkness prevails?  Will Brazen be able to see past the darkness or will he push Noah away so far that she will not come back?

This is an emotional read.  It’s about a girl who wants to enjoy and live life.  Noah’s character is wonderfully written.  She is understanding and caring, bold and bright and a wonderful person.  She brings  a lightness to those in her circle that is needed.  She’s not judgemental as shown by her acceptance of Benson who has OCD and is very unconventional.  She is also so strong to be able to accept what life has given her and move on, not to mention her strength during a time where Brazen needs her most.  She is also bold. The meaning of bold “Necessitating courage or daring” for me, definitely hits the mark in Noah’s character.

Brazen is a wonderful hero.  He is honest and upfront.  Protective and sweet.  He is also absolutely gorgeous!  He has an immediate attraction to Noah and from there on out, he cannot get her out of his mind.  Although he would like a relationship with Noah, he doesn’t believe he has the time.  He has a duty to protect his friend from harm and he does not want to be sidetracked.  He is so protective and caring of Sunday.  I loved their friendship and their interactions.  I also loved how there was no love triangle nonsense in this book.  All three, Noah, Sunday and Brazen got along wonderfully.  As for the way he treats Noah.  He treats her like she’s everything he’s ever wanted.  How can you not love a guy like this?

Something happens in this book that I did not see coming.  I did not and could not believe it until the end of the book.  I still don’t want to believe it’s true.  I don’t know that I like how it happens or that it happened at all.

Aside from that, the book flowed well and I was immersed in the world that Jennifer Michael created.  The characters were all flawed and human as were their families and were just all around wonderful, quirky loveable characters.  If there is more to read on these characters, I would gobble it up without a doubt.

EXCERPT
"Stop staring at the man and say something?"

Imani found working with Adrianna at the bar was worse than working at the studio. At least at the studio she could pull rank and kick her out the office.

"What man?" She let out a long audible breath.

"The man that has you spilling drinks and stepping on my toes."

“Ouch!” She stomped on Imani’s foot and wiggled out of reach.
Imani had been preoccupied with trying to see the features of his face. The booth he selected was tucked away off to the side. The overhead lights barely illuminated the table top. It was the table repeat customers chose when they wanted to partake of the live music and robust menu and have privacy.

It was public yet private. So private they'd witnessed more than one heated exchange going on in that booth over the length of her employment. It wasn't called the make-out booth for nothing.

Imani stole glances at him for most of the afternoon. She could see the top of his arm covered in a white dress shirt and the swirled tattoo on his forearm. That must be his girlfriend. She reasoned as the olive-skinned brunette took her seat across from him.

"You think that's his girlfriend?" Imani whispered. Adrianna topped off the customer's soft drink and walked over to stand beside her.

"If she's not, she wanna be." She dried her hands on her apron.

Imani faced her, "What makes you say that?"

"That man is a sexual magnet, paid with a Titanium Card, and his eyes," she shook her head and raised her hand in the truth, "panty droppers."

"For real?" Imani hissed. The forced air behind panty made curiosity dance through her veins.

"For. Real." She glanced over at the table as if validating her statement. Her face twisting in agony and she nodded.

Imani glanced back over there. The last thing she needed was to stare into his panty-dropper eyes. She wanted to ask Adrianna more but a warning voice in her head warned her to leave it alone.

There was no room in her life for men. Life was hectic enough without adding sexy, magnetic, panty-dropping men to the equation and her panties needed to stay in place. The last man she'd given her heart passed her up for a bigger fish and left her without so much as a blink of an eye. Her time was better spent trying to find another job.

"Have you heard from your landlord?"

"I got a letter about a new owner. But they didn't mention the balance and I didn't either. I sent what I could, hoping it will hold me over."

$1250 a month times six months left her owing the new landlord at least $7,500. It might as well have been a cool million because she didn't have a hundred dollars to her name. She hated owing people.

She was ashamed to admit what she sent barely covered the late fees but she still had to pay the utilities at the studio on top of her own household expenses.

"How long you think that's going to last? You can't keep doing this to yourself. This dance studio is like a leech draining you dry."

“Why would you say that? What’s wrong with giving my students culture?” Imani stiffened at her harsh analogy.

"Ain't nobody got time for that!" She turned to Imani tossing a towel in the sink. "Culture won't feed you and pay your bills."

Tears stung her eyes. But she didn't have time to cry or feel sorry for herself. She needed a plan.

"Is he cute?" It was better to talk about the panty dropper than her landlord.

It was Adrianna's turn to shrug, "He's alright for a white boy. You know I like my papi chulo sun kissed, bilingual, and Spanish in his blood. Can't have my momma passing out on me."

"Indeed, your mom would pass out if you brought anything but a Hispanic man home." Imani laughed.

"That's why I keep my business my business." She tossed her blonde hair and headed to the other end of the bar to check on a customer.

Adrianna talked a good game but she had a man. Her traditional ways went to her core from cooking authentic Mexican food to Salsa dancing every Thursday night. Imani looked back at his exposed skin, it didn't look white but not brown either. More like a warm beige. His head turned in her direction and she felt trapped. Unable to look away, but unable to see his face either.

The young lady returned to the table and Imani spun around, facing the mirrored wall behind the bar. She glanced up into the reflection and watched him lean forward. The light caught his profile with his thick wavy dark brown hair. He smiled up at his companion.

Imani's stomach clinched. He had a deep dimple.

She watched the young lady leave the table carrying her purse and shoulder bag. They must be done for the afternoon. She wanted to see this mystery man for herself.
