REVIEW & BLITZ: Your Rhythm

Your Rhythm
by Katia Rose
(Sherbrooke Station, #1)
Publication date: May 24th 2018
Genres: Adult, Comedy, Contemporary,Romance

Synopsis:

You know what they say: save a snare, bang a drummer.

Kay Fischer is well aware of what they say, and she intends to ignore it completely.

After her first step into the world of music journalism ended with a screw-up so royal it deserved a crown, Kay’s been struggling to re-stack the building blocks of her career. Salvation comes in the form of Sherbrooke Station, the latest alt-rock craze to grace Montreal’s legendary music scene.

A front page feature on the band everyone’s talking about seems like a foolproof shot at success, even after Kay meets their drummer. Matt Pearson might have a smile sexy enough to be the eighth deadly sin and a passion for music so powerful it makes her heart ache, but Kay’s got things under control.

She’s a professional, goddammit, and a professional would not get tongue-tied over a source, even a source who’s a six-foot, tattooed rock god with an affinity for tight jeans.

A professional would not find herself opening her door at an hour long past midnight to pull said source inside and lead him to her bed.

No, that’s not at all what a professional would do.

EXCERPT

Matt’s still propped against the edge of the bar when I reach him. The crowd is thinner over here and I get a good look at him from a few feet away: sandy undercut hair and an angular face, softened by full lips and just the right amount of stubble. He’s got the perfect features to pull off his eyebrow piercing, and while they’re currently covered by a navy blue coat, all my internet stalking has proved he’s got the perfect arms to pull off the collection of tattoos on both.

Eric the Surfer might have been hot in a general sense, but Matt Pearson is one hundred percent my type.

Did I just admit someone in Sherbrooke Station is my type?

“Hey,” I call sharply, hoping I can help myself deny that little revelation by acting annoyed with him. “Giving up that easy?”

He gives me a cautious glance and then shifts his eyes from side to side, like he’s making sure I’m really talking to him.

“On looking for me,” I elaborate. “I’m Kay Fischer.”

Now his dark eyes travel up and down the length of me in a completely unapologetic stare. He smirks when they reach mine again.

MY REVIEW ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Kay Fischer is a journalist and writes the Arts and Culture section for the Montreal newspaper La Gare.  This is not where or how she saw her journalistic dreams going but after a career crushing stunt, she will take what she can get.  She also now follows 2 rules she set for herself.

1.         Don’t mess with Atlas Records and
2.         Never date or sleep with a source.

Matt Pearson is the drummer for Sherbrooke Station.  He is sent to meet Kay Fischer when his best friend and lead singer, Ace Turner, fails to show up for his scheduled interview.

What results is an intense attraction.  One that Kay is leery to pursue and one that Matt will do anything for.

When Kay’s chief editor asks her to write a frontpage piece about the tension between Sherbrooke Station and Atlas records to save the paper, will Kay break her rules and her own heart in the process?

This is a refreshing and funny read that I enjoyed thoroughly.  It is not the regular bad boy rocker trope.  The story this author created feels authentic, these people and places feel real.  It inspires and gives off such a wonderful vibe.

I loved Matt.  He made me smirk and laugh at the lengths he will go to see Kay.  He is an up front, honest and sexy guy.  He completely melted my heart.

The way the main characters came together was seamless.  I also loved the secondary characters in the band and would love to read their stories.

This is an endearing read and is oh so sexy.  Recommended to anyone who loves a wonderfully written romance where you cannot help but be invested in the characters and their futures.

I received an ARC of this book.  All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Promise Me Always
by Rhonda Shaw
Publication date: Feb 26th 2018
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance

Synopsis:

Gabrielle Wells was everything Danny Anderson shouldn’t want. She was his opposite in every way, but he couldn’t keep his distance, and fate seemed to push them together at every turn. She consumed him, and the more he learned about her, the more he realized she was exactly what he didn’t know he needed. But then past mistakes forced him to walk away and never look back, breaking Gabrielle’s heart in the process.

Fast forward six years, and it seems as if fate is intervening again. Danny, now a best-selling rap artist, returns to his hometown, and is reunited with the only girl he’s ever loved.

Gabrielle isn’t the girl he left behind, though, and Danny realizes life has thrown her quite a few curves. But he will stop at nothing to get her back, refusing to let his true desires—love and family—continue to elude him. My Review⭐⭐⭐⭐

I adore this book. From the first word until the very last, it kept and held my attention. It was so gripping that when I had to put it down, I still thought about it.  It is angsty and the characters were well written and developed.

I loved D.  From the beginning he is very hard and jaded but he starts to mellow and open up with Gabrielle.  He is so protective an even sweet which is contrary to the front he puts up with everyone.  He protects Gabrielle at every turn from walking her to ballet class to standing up for her with bullies.  He had a terrible upbringing with his alcoholic, drug-abusing father and his mother left him when he was younger.  He puts himself in a bad situation with a gang because he was trying to make up for his lack of family.  At the last moment, he makes a choice.  A choice that will follow him and Gabrielle the rest of their lives.

Gabrielle is timid and insecure.  When she arrives at her new school, all she wants is to be unnoticed.  Unfortunately, because of the way she dresses, she sticks out like a sore thumb.  She is made fun of and people whisper behind their hands about her.  When she arrives at her first class, someone steals her book and begins teasing her.  He does not give back her book until D tells him to.  Afterward, she thanks him quietly.
But D has made his own assumptions about her based on the way she dresses.  He assumes she is “stuck up” and that she believes she is better than everyone in the run-down school.  He soon learns that he could not be more mistaken.  Gabrielle is kind, generous and unjudgmental.  She brings life and love into his life until he destroys it quite purposefully.

This story is told in dual POV.

What I feel was overlooked a little bit at the end is what Gabrielle will do with her life.  Will she follow through somehow with her passion? I also find that although she loves Danny, she forgives him a little too easily.  After what he did, I think it would be a little more difficult to forgive.  Maybe it required a little more groveling on his behalf.

Beside that however, I loved them as a couple.  The opposites attract trope really worked in this book.  His briskness to her kindness.  His extrovert to her introvert.  He is the ideal alpha male, wanting to protect and cherish the one he loves at any cost.

Gabrielle is a strong character.  Although D tries to protect her from his life, she demands to be part of it.  She does not want to be left out.  Good or bad she loved him and he, her.  They are so wonderful together.  Each taking and giving in equal measure.  I really did not want their story to end.

I even liked “Teddy” in Ds crew what a gruff cuddly teddybear he seems to be.  I hope he gets a story.  As for Dollar, I would like to strangle him!

This book is not to be missed.  I recommend it to anyone who loves an angsty second chance contemporary romance.

Rhonda owes her love of reading to her mother who would read to her each night before bed and sometimes give into pleads for more than one chapter. These days, if Rhonda doesn’t have a book in her hands, it feels like something is missing. While romance is her true passion, Rhonda enjoys reading multiple genres.

Born in California, but transplanted to the Midwest, Rhonda is warm weather girl to the bone (even years later, winter and her are not on speaking terms) and loves nothing more than a balmy, summer evening. She also loves all animals–especially her silly French Bulldog, Keno.

Nowadays, she has so many characters and story ideas running around in her head that she can’t keep up with them. But one day, she’ll tell each one.

Excerpt

TYLER

I lift my gaze to look up at her face one more time. Her head is back, her eyes are closed, and I hear a moan of yearning as I press my mouth forward and she feels my warm breath on the entrance of her beautiful, bare pussy.

The world has disappeared. We are not in an alley behind a strip club. We are on a cloud. High above everyone and everything. We are ascending. And I am intent on taking her higher and higher until the earth falls far away and we are both transported from the poison and pain of this small world.

At least for a moment.

I gently kiss the inside of her thighs. First the right, then the left. Then I nuzzle my nose against the soft, already wet space between her legs. I breathe in deep, taking in every bit of the way she smells. I can’t get enough. I want to bury my face inside of her warmth and let her become my oxygen.

I can’t get close enough down on my knees as I am, so I grab her around the waist, throw her legs over my shoulders, and rise up to my full height so that I can keep her placed directly above my greedy mouth.

I flick my tongue against the folds of her opening and her knees shudder. So I lick more slowly—I don’t want her to come just yet—parting her wider with my fingers and letting my tongue slide inside. She tastes even better than she smells. Like the ocean on a perfect summer day.

I find her clit and wrap the whole of my mouth around it, building up pressure on her with my tongue and pulling back until I hear her say, “Oh, my God. Oh, my God, what are you doing to me?” And now I’m sucking and smiling at the same time.

I pull my mouth off long enough to look up and say, “Just getting started…”

EXCERPT

At least Raider didn’t strip naked outside the glade to shift. With brisk steps, he led Jordan along the trail headed southwest, setting a pace that didn’t allow for talking. Even with her tremendous stamina and strength, Raider’s legs were longer, his body stronger, and by the time they reached the grassy knoll, Jordan was panting, but at least her sexual frustrations from earlier had been replaced by irritation.

Raider strutted over to a boulder and pulled his shirt off, flinging it over the rock. “We’ll do a thorough patrol of the area first then get some sleep.” When he reached for his jeans, Jordan’s heart jackhammered, reverberating through her body as though it had been attached to a metal disc and struck by the gong’s mallet. The lust came flooding back down her body and throbbed between her legs.

Fantastic.

Regaining her breath, Jordan glowered at Raider’s muscled back. “Just so you know, I don’t want to be patrol partners.” What Jordan really wanted Raider to know is that she had no intention of mating or claiming him no matter how much he made her body quiver.

He looked over his shoulder at her. “Tough shit. We’re stuck with each other night and day until the new pairings, so you’ll just have to put aside your grievances and do your duty.”

Jordan hated the way her mouth gaped open. How can I be both cross and hot for him at the same time?

Raider’s sneer turned into an amused grin as he turned to face her, thumb brushing over the button of his jeans.

Jordan’s traitorous eyes zeroed in on his fingers unzipping his pants. Her throat went dry while heat pooled between her legs. Wet and dry. Cold and hot. Jordan placed a hand on her forehead. Maybe she did have a fever.

Pants unfastened, Raider hooked his thumbs through the belt loops and tugged down—slowly.

Jordan clenched her teeth. He was taunting her, toying with her. Somehow, he knew she was attracted to him just like every other she-wolf in the hollow.

Folding her arms, Jordan sniffed dismissively to hide her agitation. “You need help or something?”

Raider’s hands stilled on his jeans. “If you’re offering, I wouldn’t want to disappoint you by turning you down.” Jordan scowled, and Raider chuckled. “But it looks like you’re the one who needs help.” He stared pointedly at her pants then dropped his with one swift tug that made Jordan suck in a breath.

Sweet mother of moonshine.

excerpt
A calm comes over me. “Are you going to kill me, too?”

“So far, you haven’t shown you can follow orders very well, have you?”

“I won’t tell on you,” I blurt out.

He snorts.

We’re heading west, out of the city. The party seems like a million years ago. They’ll be sitting down for dinner now. Wondering where I am. Will they think I left?

The man’s face is in shadows. Streetlamps flash over his face as the van moves along, revealing a nose carved out of granite and a strong jaw. I wouldn’t call him handsome. He’s too rough-hewn for that, like someone forgot to sand over the angles.

“Please—”

“Be quiet.” His soft menace is directed at me this time. I shrink in my seat.

We’re going into a run-down suburb, Westdale or Ferndale or something, a place with a lot of little tiny box homes. It’s a place I never go. We wind through the streets, deeper and deeper.

It’s hard to even look at him. That means acknowledging what’s happening to me. This is real. I may never make it out of this alive. That’s what I think when I turn my head to the side, glance at him from beneath low lashes. Which makes his gray Henley and dark-wash jeans seem way too ordinary. If this were the day I was going to die, wouldn’t he be wearing something more dramatic?

But that’s just wishful thinking from my panicked mind. He can hurt me wearing anything. I’m so deep in danger it’s hard to breathe.

He slows on a far block and turns. The van headlights hit overgrown weeds and the charred remains of a house. The place burned at one time, long ago.

He circles around and goes into the alley behind it. He shoves it into park and does something to the wires that make it shut off. He turns to me. “I’m gonna get out and deal with this guy. If you move out of this seat, I’ll kill you. And if, by some miracle, you manage to get away, I’m going to kill everybody you called on this phone in the last month. Can you guess how? I’ll give you a hint. A meat hook is involved.”

I suck in a breath. He doesn’t bother to wait for my answer. He gets out, yanks open the back door, and drags the man out—I can tell by the thuds. More punching sounds come from behind the van. The groans and garbled pleas sound worse and worse.

I huddle in my seat, listening to a man get beaten to death.

Bile rises up in my throat. I have only a few seconds to decide what to do—throw up in the van or throw up outside. He’s told me not to leave. He’s threatened my life, threatened to snap my neck. But I have an entire lifetime of my mother’s voice in my head. I have sixteen years of decorum forcing me to fumble for the door handle and push my way out.

I make it two feet away before dropping to my hands and knees and throwing up in the weeds behind the place. For all I know, he’ll kill me for this. For all I know, he’d have killed me for doing this in the van. He’s insane.

There’s not much that lands on the ground. A bottle of smartwater and some strawberries don’t leave a lot to vomit, but my stomach still heaves again and again until I’m sore, until I’m choking on bile, wrung dry.

I sit back on my feet, wiping my face, panting, one hand on the rough concrete, head down. The sounds back there have changed. There’s this grunting and a grinding sound, then a crack. It makes me want to throw up all over again.

If he’s going to kill me, I’d rather not see it coming. I guess I hope he does it fast. That’s what they always say in movies.

I hear a thump in the back of the van and then the sound of the door shutting. Footsteps coming toward me.

I force my breathing to slow. He’s behind me. I stay still.

“You’ve never seen shit like this, have you?” he asks, his voice almost conversational.

It makes me shiver, how he can sound so normal after killing a man.

My voice is low. “No.”

“You’ve only seen—what? Parties? Fancy shit?”

There’s judgment in his voice and something else. Curiosity? I can use that. I have to use that, because it’s the only tool I have. I sit back on my knees, brushing my hands against each other to wipe off the gravel. My white and pink dress is stained with blood and dirt. My cell phone is in his pocket. If I want to survive this, I need to persuade him to let me go.

“Parties,” I force myself to say in agreement. Make him see you as a person. “Tonight was my birthday party.”

He doesn’t say anything.

I look up at him. His face is cast in shadows by the moon. Demonic. Unforgiving. I wonder how I look to him, down on the ground in a dirty alley.

“Please just let me go back there,” I whisper. “Nobody has to know.”

He lowers to his haunches and brushes a strand of slick hair from my face. His thumb lingers on my cheek, brushing over my skin. “You’re right,” he says, voice musing. “No one saw me take you. No one even knew I was there. No one has to know.”

“What does that mean?” I whisper.

He stands, sucking in a ragged breath. My heart pounds as his eyes move over me.

I’ve never felt so helpless, so alone. I’m a sacrifice, kneeling at the feet of a beautiful, brutal demon.
